Anxiety, Nirvana, & Balance

As I was leaving a sound bath experience recently, one of the participants asked me if I still feel anxiety or stress even after knowing all that I know now about meditation. I think this is a very important question I wish to share because the answer is yes, this is a part of what it means to be a human living - to feel it all.

A long time ago, I realized that I would not be a buddhist monk because the height of buddhism - nirvana - is complete non-attachment; for this is how you end suffering. In order to end suffering one must not feel the highs and lows of life. Instead of riding the rollercoaster of emotions one remains neutral by NOT engaging in attachments like relationships, or pleasures, or business. In this lifetime, I choose to live and to feel, understanding that as I attach to stories, to people, to the choices I make - I will experience both pleasure and suffering because my goal is not complete nirvana but rather to experience this life in waves.

After my travels to the buddhist and daoist temples in both Taiwan and China, I found that there is a lot of peace that can come from non-attachment - especially to the past and to the future. The Power of Now is truly a powerful force to find secure footing to handle the curves of a wild life. To consistently come to a place of peace, one must build discipline and practice ways to bring you to balance so that in times of extreme stress, you already know the way home.

For me to feel grounded, secure, and confident, what brings me peace and happiness is balance... discipline and structure combined with intuition and freedom. Having a regular workout, meditation, learning, and working schedule as well as free time is incredibly important in bringing my life into balance. This perfect balance of all things in a schedule can seem like a pipe dream - especially to those with kids or in poverty - but in reality, life is what we make it and what matters to us becomes our reality.

Remember that emotions are energy in motion (e-motion). What brings us the MOST pain and dis-ease is stagnancy. Anxiety is like an emotion that is stuck inside bouncing around on repeat - find a way to move it out. This could be through breath, through healthy eating, through a walk in the woods or a talk with a friend. There is always a way to come back into motion and to clear out stagnancy.

I hope in some way these words guide you towards a deeper understanding of yourself, your desire for peace, your attachment to different emotions, or a little encouragement for a healthy life.

all my love,

Megan Smit
